At the winning gardens, samples of the soil were taken around the tulip bulbs. The LCAB will isolate and analyze DNA from these samples using metagenomics. This way all life in the earth, the micro-organisms, is mapped.

A tourist from Germany, who visited the Hortus in the fall of 2021, also planted the tulip bulbs in her garden and saw a white tulip among the red flowers. Enthusiastically, she sent a sample of the soil after instructions of Tulip Mania. The note mentions the plants that grew near the tulips.
